Marketing, part of the process of getting customers or clients, every business that wants to grow, or survive, needs it. And different business situations need different marketing strategies and use of different platforms and services.
Different business situations include.
-Online marketing/ecommerce: and even within this sector, there are options
-Providing a local service, people forget about the personal ‘sell’ factor, leaflets, local networking, Google My Business. ( or whatever it is called these days !)
-Selling B2B, requires specific market research and targeted marketing, and longer timescales. And within this sector, there are many ‘levels’, each requiring a different approach. How to promote and sell at corporate level requires specific experience and planning.
The challenge for someone new to the business world, is to identify the elements of a marketing plan best suited to their business. Ask a number of marketing specialists and you will get different answers, most related to their product or services.
For every startup or growing business there should be a Business Plan, and within the Business Plan, a Marketing Plan: the marketing plan designed to achieve the business targets and goals. So many businesses do not even have a business plan. So where is the plan to get the customers or clients?
To create a strategy to get customers or clients and start or grow a business, it is recommended to talk to a number of experienced business people first. Then if a certain platform or service is recommended, talk to a number of people who offer that platform or service ( having a business requirement and budget at the back of your mind)
Marketing is an every changing process and watching multiple videos will only confuse. If serious about understand the principles of successful marketing in todays evolving business world, talk to at least 3 successful business people about your business… and for a strategic understanding of what is required today, read the book, ‘Marketing is Dead’, by Carlos Gil
However be aware, when asking about marketing a new business or a business idea, a business person may advise, “Not practical or possible”. Good to ask the question, too many people are spending time and money on promotional and marketing activities on business ideas which are not realistic.
For a revealing exercise, ask a number of contacts or those trying to sell services. “by the way, what is marketing?”
